Horse Racing Selection Hunter Filter - LTO_Report

The latest addition to the Horse Racing Selection Hunter is the filter called LTO_Report. This is the individual race report for the horse in its last race as per the Racing Post.

By searching for common phrases found in the Race Report we can look at how the horse faired in its previous run. It can gives us an indication of the style of horse. For instance, does it like to lead from the front ? It can also give us an indication of how the Horse faired at the distance it was running at. Did it weaken towards the end of the race ?

Using LTO_Report in TSM

LTO_Report is a String Filter in TSM. We can either search for individual strings/phrases or we can search for Multiple strings/phrases. Lets start off by looking for an individual phrase. It can appear anywhere in the Race Report so we need to use wild cards either side of the string/phrase we are searching for. That means we want to use the *LIKE* operator.

A better way of searching strings can be by using the LIST operator. This allows us to provide a comma separated list of strings to search for inside the LTO_Report. We dont need to worry about wildcards. When we use LIST, we only need one of the strings to be found.

This is the equivalent of writing ‘led or prominent’. We only need one of these strings to be found for it to fulfil the criteria. If we want to make sure ALL our strings in the LIST are found in the LTO_Report then we need to use the LIST (AND) Operator as below :

Lets have look at the results of the above query.

The number of results returned exceeds the built-in limit of 15,000.  Lets have a closer look at this set of results by pressing –> Analyse Results –> Additional Breakdown

We could choose any of these angles to look at in more detail.

Note – Our original number of results exceeded 15,000. This meant that only results up to September 2024 was shown. As we add additional filters, the time span available to us will increase until the query results are less than 15,000.

Other Ideas To Explore

Look for Horses that ‘Weakened’ and have dropped back in distance. (DistanceChange).  In the same way, look for horses that ‘Kept On’ and have gone up in distance or dropped in class (ClassChange).

Below is a really simple example for looking at Horses that weakened right at the end of their last race. The LIST Value used is ‘weakened inside final furlong, weakened over 1f out, weakened towards finish’. Distance Change is <= -1. Favourite Rank is less than or equal to 4.

In the example below we are looking for horses that ‘kept on’ in their last race. A few filters have been added to compliment the type of horses/races we are looking for.

If you are into Laying Horses then look for Horses that were ‘towards rear throughout’ or ‘held up’.

As a base to build on or just as an additional filter to a system you already have, I think we can all agree the LTO_Report opens quite a few avenues to explore.
