6 Point Divisor Staking Plan

History

The 6 Point Divisor Staking Plan is known to be popular in Australia. Also known simply as the 6 Point Plan it is similar to the Retirement Staking Plan (that incidentally also stems from Australia). One of the earliest mentions on the internet is from 1989 on the Practical Punting Website.

How Does it Work ?

6 Point Divisor works by setting a target to win per series of bets. This Target is divided by 6 for each bet. Once your Target has been hit, the series starts again. The Target can increase/decrease after each bet wins or loses. The Divisor can also increase/decrease after each bet wins or loses.

  • After a Winning Bet the Divisor Decreases by the Winning Bet Odds Unless:

If the new Divisor is equal or less than the Minimum Divisor then a Safety Brake is implimented whereby the remaining Target is added to a new Initial Target AND the remaining Divisor is added to a new Initial Divisor. A Minimum Divisor of 2 is normally used.

  • After a Losing Bet the Divisor Stays the Same Unless:

If the next stake is greater than the Maximum Stake then a Safety Brake is implemented whereby the remaining Target is added to a new Initial Target AND the remaining Divisor is added to a new Initial Divisor. The Maximum Stake can be set as per your own Risk Threshold. At Default, 5% of the Start Bank is used.

That is essentially the 6 Point Divisor Staking Plan. There are a couple of extra settings which can be used and adjusted.

  • Maximum Losing Run – Series Resets and we start again if the Maximum Losing Run is hit.
  • After a Winning Bet, if the Target has not been reached, but the Series is in Profit. We can treat the Profit as Target hit, ‘If Within x % of Target‘. This would Reset the Series and start again. (Alternative Target).

Finally, when the staking plan was devised (pre internet), you could only bet in whole or half units. So there are additional options to round up the stake to the nearest half unit or nearest whole unit. These days, where the majorty of betting is online, we can use the exact figures calculated.

Example - Favourites at Newton Abbott - 24/06/2025

Example  – Using our built in Selection Hunter I have grabbed the favourites for Newton Abbott on the 24/06/2025. The Settings used are as below in TSM. Commission is also set at 2%.

Bet 1: Stake is Target / Divisor so the start Stake in the series is simply £1. The bet loses making our Series Profit -£1. This loss is added to our Initial Target of £6. New Target is £7. The Divisor stays the same at 6.

Bet 2: Stake is Target / Diviosr so the Stake is now 7 divided by 6 = £1.17. This bet loses making our Series Profit -£2.17. Our new Target is now £8.17. The Divisor remains at 6.

Bet 3:– Stake is Target / Divisor so the stake is now 8.17 divided by 6 = £1.36. This bet wins making our Series Profit -£1.48. The odds of the winning was 1.52. This is taken off the current Divisor. New Divisor is 6 – (1.52-1) = 5.48.

Bet 4: Stake is Target / Divisor so the Stake is now 7.48 divided by 5.48 = £1.36. This bet loses making our Series Profit -£2.84. Our new Target is now £8.84. The Divisor stays the same at 5.48.

Bet 5: Stake is Target / Divisor so the stake is now 8.84 divided by 5.48 = £1.61. This bet wins with odds of 2.19 making our Series Profit £-0.96. The winning odds are taken off the current Divisor. New Divisor is 5.48 – (2.19-1) = 4.29.

Bet 6: Stake is Target / Divisor so the Stake is now 6.96 divided by 4.29 = £1.62. This bet wins with odds of 3.9 making our Series Profit £3.64.  This hasn’t hit our Target of £6.96. However in the TSM settings I have set an Alternative Target that says that if the Series Profit is within 50% of the Target after 1 or more bets then that will be treated as a Series Win.  As £3.64 is greater than 50% of the target (£3.48) the Series Resets.

If you were playing this live you would possibly would call it a day now and miss out bet 7. Bet 7 Stake would start again with £1.

Example - Favourites at Wolverhampton - 23/06/2025

Example  – Using our built in Selection Hunter I have grabbed the favourites for Wolverhampton on the 23/06/2025. The Settings used are as below in TSM.  The only difference in this example is I have set the Alternative Target to with 20% of the Target. In the first example this was set at 50%. Commission is also set at 2% again.

Bet 1:  Stake is Target / Divisor. Start stake in the Series is simply £1. The bet loses making our Series Profit -£1. This loss is added to our Initial Target of £6. New Target is £7. The Divisor stays the same at 6.

Bet 2:  Stake is Target / Divisor. Stake is now £7 divided by 6 = £1.17. This bet wins at odds of 2.2 making our Series Profit £0.38. Our new Target is now £5.62. The winning odds is subtracted from the divisor. 6 – (2.2-1) = 4.8.

Bet 3:  Stake is Target / Divisor. £5.62 / 4.8 = £1.17. This bet wins at odds of 4.18. The Series Profit is now £3.65. The winning odds are subtracted from the current Divisor. New Divisor would be 4.8 – (4.18-1) = 1.62. As this is below our Minimum Divisor of 2 the Safety Brake is applied. This means that the Series Profit, Target and Divisor are carried over into a new series. New Divisor = 6 + 1.62 = 7.62. New Target = £6 + (£5.62-£3.65) = £7.97.

Bet 4: Stake is Target / Divisor. £7.97 divided by 7.62 = £1.05. The bet loses. New Target is £9.02. Divisor stays the same.

Bet 5: Stake is Target / Divisor. £9.02 divided by 7.62 = £1.18. The bet wins at odds of 2.8. New Divisor  = 7.62 – (2.8-1) = 5.82. Series Profit is now £5.06. The current Target was £9.02 so this falls short of our ‘Within 20% of Target Alternative Target. New target is £6.94

Bet 6: Stake is Target / Divisor. £6.94 divided by 5.82 = £1.19. The bet loses. Series Profit is now £3.87. New target = £8.13. Divisor remains the same.

Bet 7: Stake is Target / Divisor. £8.13 divided by 5.82 = £1.4. The bet wins at odds of 2.42 with a profit of £1.95. Series Profit is now £5.82. This is still a little short of our Alternative Target of ‘Within 20% of Target’. New divisor is 5.82 – (2.42-1) = 4.4.  New Target is  £8.13-£1.95 = £6.18.

Bet 8: Stake is Target / Divisor. £6.18 divided by 4.4 = £1.4. The bet wins at odds of 1.78 with a Profit of £1.07. This makes the Series Profit £6.89. This is more than our Target of £6.18. The Series is complete and is now Reset.

Example - Demo Data

When only covering short sequences of bets we are not going to see the additional safety brakes. You can see in the screenshot below at Bet 19, that the Max Stake Flag has been added to the ‘Flag’ Column. This indicates that the Maximum Losing Sequence has been reached. In this instance it was set at 8. We cut our losses and Bet 20 is a complete Reset.

Further into the bet data at bet number 55 we can see our Maximum Stake has been reached. In this instance it was set at 5% of the Series Start Bank (£5). The Safety Brake is therefore put into action. The remaining Divisor and Target are added to a NEW Series. This has the effect of reducing the next Stake to £3.01. If the Safety Brake had not been applied the next Stake would of been £6.32.

Looking further on at Bet 123 we can see a Red Flag that actually says ‘Brake St. / Max Div’. This means that the calculated next Stake was greater than 5% of the Start Series Bank (£100). The Safety Brake was implemented. However the Divisor was 6.59 and adding another 6 to the Divisor meant a new Divisor of 12.59. This is above the Maximum Divisor which had been set at 10. Therefore the series is a complete restart.

One option not yet mentioned is the ability to link the Series Start Stake to the Running Cumulative Total. In the screenshot below we can see that the Series Hit Target at Bet 5. The new Target is 6% of 106.37 which due to rounding is shown as £6.38. The new start Stake is therefore £1.06.

Caution should be used when using this option as Stakes can increase very quickly over longer sets of bets.

We can also use <LB> code in the Selection Column to signify Last Bet of the Day. When switched on this will tell TSM to Reset the Series and Start again. We can see that has happened in bet 13 below. There is LB Reset Flag added to the Flag Column.

Final Words

Whilst adding this Staking Plan into TSM, it is apparant that this staking plan works really well when you have a good Strike Rate. It does not work as well with longer odds. It does appears to out perform Level Staking in the lower odds ranges in terms of actual profit and ROI.

One option for longer odds would be to increase the starting Divisor to reflect the longer odds. We will explore that further on a future rainy day.
